Rapa - Can't hang here long as I'm packing for a Camp-Out - over in western PA - Allegheny National Forest. So I went back to April reads - so maybe it was March - whoever recommended the Cold Cold Ground by Adrian McKinty - could I just cyber-hug you? (once identified)
I'm listening - so getting the full impact of Irish language - love how he says, "Wonda who topped her?" - Yup, the hero is scruffy, lives on the edge, but knows all about great writers - I hope he doesn't solve the mystery for 40 discs! Sigh - only 11 for this book so maybe I can just listen to each disc 4 times? ya' know to stretch it out?
I've listened to all his books (I thought!) and didn't notice this new one. So I went over to Irish writers blogs - quite a few - now to track down, search out new to me Authors. Actually, need to find a source that I liked a few years ago? Lots of Irish Authors and their most recent publications.
Next...I'm going to try a Jack Higgins book - and after that...Minette Walters - Irish as well.
Nope, I'm not of that background - more Anglo-Saxon English and German. Mutt. I do have lots on hold - will jump in as I attempt their efforts.~mellowgal <^..^> purrs
Carolyn, Tana French writes murder mysteries taking place in and around Dublin. A new book should be out some time in June or July. I enjoy the stories and of course looking at life through Irish eyes. auntsono
It may be May Day but my daughters in Minneapolis are setting records with 5-9" of snow today... YIKES!
I'm in sunny 65 degree northern Wisconsin & starting out the month with a stand-alone: Down to the Wire by David Rosenfelt. No dogs in this one but a very good mystery reminiscent of Harlan Coben's books.
I am reading "A Thousand Suns" Tried reading "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" for our book club, finally gave up on it, I guess I just missed the point anyone read it?
On Mon we had 76°, tues it was 79°, then we got 6 ¾ in of snow on Wed, its going to be 50 today and all the snow is melted off the streets and sidewalks already.
I am well into House Secrets by Mike Lawson. I enjoy his political thrillers.
I have the elegance of the hedgehog on my future reading list.
It is a translated work with discussions about uncommon topics, maybe quite a bit was lost in the translation.
On the other hand French philosophers sometime get on a pedantic horse and get themselves lost in odd detours.
The author of "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is an Afghany physician in our area. He writes from his own childhood. I heard him speak and he is passionate about the topics he writes about. He does not consider himself a writer in spite of three successful bestsellers. He does not practice medicine any longer and works with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) to relieve the suffering of those affected by the wars.
Khaled Hosseini's third novel, And the Mountains Echoed, will be released on May 21. His previous books were so impressive; the first from a male viewpoint of life in Afghanistan; the second reflecting the female experience.... I remember sobbing my way through the last 50 pages....but I could not put it down. Can hardly wait for the new book!!
I've had this on reserve since I heard about it. Am anticipating as a good read as with his previous books. Have no doubt that he was as good at doctoring as he is at writing! He was blessed with multi talents and is using them well!
Awaiting me at the library is the new book by Isabel Allende, MAYA'S DIARY. Have always enjoyed Allende's stories! Here's a brief summary:
"Neglected by her parents, nineteen-year-old Maya Nidal has grown up in a rambling old house in Berkeley with her grandparents. Her grandmother Nidia, affectionately known as Nini, is a force of nature—willful and outspoken, unconventionally wise with a mystical streak, and fiercely protective—a woman whose formidable strength helped her build a new life after emigrating from Chile in 1973. Popo, Maya's grandfather, is an African American astronomer and professor—a gentle man whose solid, comforting presence helps calm the turbulence of Maya's adolescence.
When Popo dies of cancer, Maya goes completely off the rails. With her girlfriends—a tight circle known as the Vampires—she turns to drugs, alcohol, and petty crime, a downward spiral that eventually bottoms out in Las Vegas. Lost in a dangerous underworld, she is caught in the crosshairs of warring forces—a gang of assassins, the police, the FBI, and Interpol. Her one chance for survival is Nini, who helps her escape to a remote island off the coast of Chile. Here Maya tries to make sense of the past, unravels mysterious truths about life and about her family, and embarks on her greatest adventure: the journey into her own soul."
I read the Elegance of the Hedgehog too; remember sorta liking it but also thinking it was sorta weird too, can't remember why, lol.
Today I started The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night-time which I somehow missed when it was popular years ago. I remember always being fascinated by the title. I am beginning to realize why it was so popular... very good so far.
I am enjoying "Thousand Splendid Suns" Interesting that is from a mans point of view.
