if your new laptop is Windows 8 then first thing you need to do is download classic shell
it will give you a much more familiar look to work from
By the if anyone is still running Windows XP then think about moving on to something else because it will not be supported any longer, which means security problems will no longer be fixed
Not that crucial to do this upgrade to 8.1 (I haven't done it)
When you use the classic shell you will not need to learn anything because it will almost be all familiar to the way you used it on XP
Lip Service, perhaps you can answer a question for me. This morning, after logging in, appearing on my screen is something called "Home Group"...I can't remember all of it, but it is not listed when I go to "All Programs". I don't know what this is, as I didn't download anything new or otherwise. Same thing occurred when in my startup, appears SpeedUpMyPC, which I didn't ask for, or download, it appears to be a Microsoft offshoot of something,(as does the Homegroup thing) but again, doesn't show in the All Programs list. So if either of these do not show, how can I Delete them? Or do I need this Homegroup thing? I know I don't want this SpeedUPMyPC, as it encourages me to "purchase", and it also slows down my getting into my opening programs. I run Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion.
Homegroup is a Microsoft thing it is for sharing files and directories with other PC in your household
SpeedUpMyPC is a program to tweak some things on your computer, it is not a virus, but if you dont want it then you can go to the control panel and choose to uninstall it
Lip Service, the Speed Up My PC program, must be a piggy-back on some other program, because, as I said, it does not show up in the "See All Programs" list, so can't uninstall it. If I knew what it was part of, I might be able to do so. Might it be a pa rt of "Driver Booster"?
The pc/mac help desk grp is nowhere near as active as it used to be, a few people post once in a while but no one seems to be answering questions, the last handful of questions i posted were ignored. And before, there,d usually be a lot of helpful replies but not anymore. I wonder if Pete,s ok? (the guy who moderates it)
I just finished rdg War by Ian Morris, a historian whose books are excellent, espec. his first book, Why the West Rules-For Now, highly recommended.
As this is a new month I got my free book from Amazon Prime's lending library. This month's selection is "Journey of Hope." http://www.amazon.com/Journey-Hope-Triumph-Heartbreak-Oregon-ebook/... by Victoria Murata. A few years back, I took a trip out west, heading for the San Juan Islands for a couple of weeks, following the Oregon Trail all the way from Independence to Oregon City. This story will take thee women on this dangerous pioneer adventure. Sounds interesting.
I finished Wally Lamb’s We Are Water a couple days ago. Shortly after I started it, I commented here that I had some trouble getting into the book. Well, it didn’t take much longer before I was completely into it. Wonderful character development and a captivating story that made the book hard to put down. Oh, perhaps some chapters, especially early on, made me feel like the author was giving me a bit more detail about the lives of the characters than I really needed or wanted, but that was a rather minor issue. All and all, an excellent read.
"Where the River Ends" by Charles Martin is a great read: http://www.amazon.com/Where-River-Ends-Charles-Martin/dp/0767926994
The tale involves a former cover girl, married to an artist who discovers she is dying of cancer. She makes up a "bucket list" which includes a canoe trip down the St. Mary's River from the roots in the Okefenokee swamp to the Atlantic Ocean. This the Florida-Georgia border river that I have crossed many times.
It is a tear-at-your-heartstrings old fashioned love story. I used my Google Earth to follow the trip for the over 100 mile winding river path, while the bride's rich father was conducting a area wide dragnet to find his daughter and return her to the hospital bed (where the family can watch her die).
I picked up the latest Lisa Gardner, "Fear Nothing" and Robin Cook, "Cell" at the local library today. I'm letting my Kindle cool off a bit while I read some old fashioned hardback books. It's like going back to cooking in the days before microwaves.
