Amazon has announced three new models
The first is the update to the current Kindle fire and is priced at $139 Kindle Fire HD available Oct. 2 it is the same 7-inch tablet with a slightly upgraded processor and lower price (the current model sells for $199).
Another model is the 7-inch $229 Kindle Fire HDX (available Oct. 18,) with a quad-core processor and optional 4G connectivity, this has better screen resolution than the iPad with retinal display.
Last is the $379 high-end Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 (available Nov. 7), it has some features that will be attractive to business users.
Amazon has priced these models very close to production cost. They make their profit from the use of the device not from selling the device itself. That's why they don't care if you upgrade your device or not.

My Kindle II is three years old. I paid about $239 for it with three G conductivity. I had a failure in the first year and Kindle replaced it for free. The new one has been working just fine. I shudder to think that modern technology makes a product obsolete, or at the least, out of date in three years time. But the same is true of computers, phones, TVs and lot of other products that we use every day. I would like a new one but something in me says it a foolish waste of money to purchase something to replace something else that works perfectly OK. I guess that's why my car is 8 years old, my clothing is 10 years old and my body is 75 years old (although I have had to replace a few parts). I think my Kindle can make it a few more years, even thought it is in black and white. But those new models sure are tempting.
Mandy... I love your thought process... so like mine...
I got my current kindle as a gift 11/2 years ago for Xmas and it is working just fine.
When I see how fast they change things, I hesitate to update to a newer one as it will be obsolete by the time it arrives in my mailbox... lol
