I am finishing up "Radiant Angel" by Nelson DeMille. He has a bunch of Russians who want to blow up New York City being chased by the Diplomatic Surveillance Group. DeMille knows his New York, as most of his novels take place in the vicinity. It is a quick read with a lot of snappy language. Mostly the surveillance people worry about where and when they can go to the toilet, especially when the two man team consists of man and a woman.
At last, I have been reading steadily, unburdened by the need to clean gutters, mow the grass and such mundane tasks. I discovered a new author who, I found, writes some pretty readable (not great, but decent) crime novels. The author’s name is Paul Doiron and the two books were The Poacher’s Son and Trespasser. The protagonist, Mike Bowditch, is a Maine Game Warden who, in spite of his profession watching over the animal kingdom, can’t avoid getting involved in chasing human law breakers. After while that seems to stretch reality a bit, but it was easy reading.
Next I read Lisa Unger’s latest, Crazy Love You, another of her suspense novels. It took me a while to get into it--nearly 100 pages--but once I did it was a pretty suspenseful read. I recommend that one with more enthusiasm than the Doiron books.
Now I am reading The Jesus Cow by Michael Perry. Yes! That’s the title. And it is starting out wonderful. Perry is a humorist who lives in rural Wisconsin who, according to the inside book jacket, has been involved in a number of things. Anyway, a farmer, Harley Jackson, goes into his barn on Christmas Eve to find that one of his cows has given birth to a calf that bears a pattern showing the image of Jesus on its side. And it goes on from there. I’m sure that most of you have read about such things happening around the world from time to time, whether it is the Virgin Mary, Jesus, or whoever, found on some natural or man made object. I am hoping for a lot of laughs from this one; I need them.
loruach... I had 2 Doirons waiting at the library (#4 & 5)... went to pick them up today and found The Jesus Cow in the new book section... looks like a fun read (Fannie Flagg style?)
They also had Finders Keepers & Stephanie Plum #21 which I think I missed last year...
Going up north for a week so I am all set :)
(Thanx for that 'Cow' suggestion)
I am a fan of both Doiron and C.J. Box, wish Doiron would put out another book. If you dare to read female books - Nevada Barr series is also good. I am reading Dennis Lehane's - A Drink Before the War on the computer, Margaret Truman's - Murder at the Congressional Library in waiting room for doctor, dentist and physical therapy, have Kay Hooper's - Haunted at my bedside. Like my reading varied and when I can. I am with you Carolyn on 50 shades - do not have time for trash reading or I would do so in the grocery aisle. The Jesus Cow does sound interesting Larouche. Let us know how you like it.
