I was reading the Scorpion Press article on Louise Penny and their special edition of her latest book, which is special indeed at $150.00. Anyway in describing her talent, they wrote,
Penny shows us that lives can be pulled by the tolls of abuse, deceit, greed, and revenge. She is, in other words, up with the Mankells and Nessers in Europe and writers such as Pelecanos in the USA.
I consider myself well-read, but only recognized one of those names (Henning Mankell, the Swedish author). How about the rest of you; have you heard of or read any of these authors???

I also have read one of George Pelecanos novels, it is good but you have to be very familiar with the Washington DC area to appreciate the story (which I am not)
I don't see the similarity with Louise Penny except that both authors work depend strongly on the locale of the work.
Have not heard of the other two authors
Did not recognize Nesser, but Mankell and Pelecanos I know and have read some.
I have read most of George Pelecanos' novels and have his latest, The Double, on hold at my library. He is on my rather long list of favorite authors. I believe he addresses racial issues, with compassion and understanding, as well as any writer today. And, yes Lip Service, much of his focus is centered in the Washington DC area, but I see that as secondary to his overall themes.
I saw her name at B&N when I was there the other day. I had never seen her in a book store before only the library. Good author. I was hunting another book with limited time so I couldn't pick it up. But I don't think that book was priced at $150.00 at least I hope not.
