Interesting concept, but my response is, "No".  The only book I was attracted to was the set of Malcolm Gladwell's books and it was not because of the cover, but rather my experience with the author.  And yet, I'm sure some of those books would provide good reading.  It must be a difficult task to catch our attention to a first book by a new author.  So glad I have Bookoholics for that!!

PS: If you haven't read any of Malcolm Gladwell's books (Blink, The Tipping Point, or Outliers), I recommend you treat yourself to an enlightening experience.

Well, this is interesting on a couple of levels. First, who knew there was even a Top Book Cover list? I sure didn't! This is certainly an interesting collection - I'm not certain that any of them would draw me to pick up the book but they are a cool collection.

Then, secondly, while a cover won't make or break a book selection for me, some will definitely draw my attention more than others. I've noticed that at book sales, when the book is missing its dust jacket I tend to skim over them. I know, an unfair prejudice toward naked books.

IMHO, Gravity's Rainbow should not have a cover because it is unreadable.  I have a 25 page guide to Gravity's Rainbow and I don't understand that.  They were pretty covers but how much do they matter in the world of E-Books where there is no cover, except on the Amazon page.  There was a time when I would shop the shelves of bookstores for a seemingly interesting book only to be disappointed when a pretty cover ended up with a dead dog inside.

Okay Mandy, your post made me go look up this book.  Found some interesting posts on Amazon, but now I'm curious why a book published in 1973 is on a list of Best book Covers in 2012??????

No you cannot tell a book by its cover.

However one can argue that the cover is part of the book, and even though it is just packaging, there are times when I was attracted to a book because I took notice of its cover.

My wife took a course in web design and her project was to design a book cover with some specifications. When she sent the art work to some of her friends, many wanted to know when the book was coming out because "now they are really wanted to read it"

I find that one important part of the book is the font used, some special books somehow beg for fonts with panache.

I thought the first cover was very interesting and inviting in an odd sort of way.  I also like that cookbook "Polpo."  Again inviting in the way it looked but also the spine being exposed so it laid flat was an excellent idea.

Have read none of these books, but at one of my book clubs the woman said she read "Winter Garden" strictly because she liked the cover. On my NOOK it shows all the covers of the books.

It shows the covers of the books on my kindle app too.
