Whether that formula is old or not, I still think it makes the most sense. As a vegetarian I still do it that way. (Yeah, my mom would serve a lamb chop and salad and lima beans. Milk of course. Or meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans. YUM! I'm not a vegetarian because I hate the taste of meat!!)
