sometimes you put off checking the news each day, in fear of what might have happened.

For a long time I avoided the news for that reason, more or less. Now I listen to BBC world news and research what I want.

When you were a kid you sometimes wished humans and their works would disappear leaving just the natural world.

not exactly completely disappear, but I escaped into the woods as often as possible
