I have heard of people putting tampons in the fridge to keep them fresh.

Depends on the definition of "necessarily" I guess.  I heard one of those talk radio experts say that refrigerating your can of coffee or whatever you buy it in keeps it fresher, so for the last year I have tried that. My refrigerator is about 37F and it is -6 outside so I may crawl in there myself to warm up.

I've heard recently that cucumbers will last longer if not refrigerated. Mine are in the fridge, habit I guess.
