Why is "bra" singular and "panties" plural?

I don't know why.
The same reason we call sneakers sneakers, not tennis shoes, I guess...

I agree...panties....so sexy....underwear...not so much.
I like the word 'bra'....brassier sounds so clinical...although I do use it once in a while and get a kick out of the responses...Like "I haven't heard that word in ages..."!
Like which is sexier...girdle...(argh..) or garter belt...?

I never thought of it, but it is confusing and misleading. You would think it would be the other way around, but now after all these years it would seem quite funny....can you imagine a romantic moment...
