Okay, so I have started getting this message on my lap top "your battery is able to charge normally. However, it is at the end of its usable life. You can realize a longer operating time with a new battery. You might want to consider purchasing a replacement battery now." Then it has a button that will send me to a sight to purchase a replacement battery.
But here's the thing I rarely use my battery. I have had the computer since around 2007 or 2008. I use it as my main computer, but generally keep it plugged in. Once in a while I will allow the battery to run down and then recharge it, but I rarely use it when it is unplugged.
So, do I really need to buy a replacement battery of is it just a regularly scheduled notice based on when I bought the machine?

it's an embedded notice based on the assembly and sale date of the machine. the manufacturer makes a ton of money on replacement parts...you might want to think on it tho cause batteries do die...and if you want to consider it then check other sites....you can get a comparable price listing by going to
and seeking out the particular item...they will then list the available sellers and in a list beginning with the cheapest and continuing on up to the most expensive
I love it when there is consensus! LOL Thanks you for responding through, I have to admit, I am of two minds myself.
Ya can buy one cheaper from a computer store than the manufacturer . Best Buy , New Egg are two i use ....
what problem said .. i concur .. i would add tho its not an emergency so shop around and do whats the most convienient and most affordable for you .. you have time .. but you don't wanna wait till its too late .
you actually don't need a battery to run a laptop as long as you have access to power. the clock and other settings are kept by a little flat watch battery on the motherboard so as long as you have electricity where you lug it, you can do without the battery til you decide to get one...and being of two minds.....do they argue? can i watch?
I seem to remember that when I bought this machine one of the features was an extended life battery. I am sure the performance of the batteries have much improved in the last 5 or 6 years, so I am not opposed to getting a new one. But I was just thinking, will I need to dispose of the the old battery in a particular way?
If it was my Battery i would just chunk it in trash or throw it somewhere . But that is me ....
the battery can be turned in on one of those community days when they take electronics and such or take it to a site that accepts them. they contain lots of good stuff to contaminate the environment and the ground water like lead and mercury which can lead to mental retardation...
Here is yet another opinion. Occasionally I have had students back when I used to do classroom courses that ran their laptops without the battery and by without I mean with the battery out of the laptop. The little box in the plug in cord takes in AC and adapts it usually to DC maybe 12-20volts DC depending on your computer. One way to tell is simply remove the battery plug in the electric cord and fire it up. Maybe there are some that need the battery.

Just wanted to add that I am running my six year old Gateway without the battery installed but not because it is dead but because a while back I had one of those cascading events where it began to open an infinite amount of browsers when I tried to open a zip file that I had sent to myself from a different computer. And in order to shut the computer down I had to remove the battery besides unplugging the computer and just have not put it back it.
For recycling Best Buy and maybe some other stores also take a variety of batteries from electronic stuff.
