CLYDE, N.Y. (AP) — A man who says he caught four boys vandalizing his father-in-law's home has been charged with child endangerment after corralling them in a closet until police arrived.
Jesse Daniels was arraigned on four counts of endangering the welfare of a child after authorities say he interrupted the vandalism at the empty home in the Wayne County village of Clyde, midway between Rochester and Syracuse.
Daniels, 53, told WHAM-TV in Rochester that he heard pounding coming from the home next door the night of June 8. The house is empty while Daniels renovates it for his father-in-law.
Daniels said he went to investigate while his wife called 911. He said he found four boys, ages 8 and 10, inside with hammers. He took a hammer from one, then stuck the boys in a closet until officers arrived, he said.
"I was fortunate that they were in that room that had a closet, so I put them in the closet," he said. "I said, 'Listen, you guys are staying here until the police come, period.'"
Their parents said Daniels handled the boys roughly and threatened them with the hammer.
The damage to the home included holes in the walls, broken windows and graffiti derogatory to women spray-painted on walls. Daniels estimated that the damage to his father-in-law's property exceeds $40,000.
He said he believed the boys committed the vandalism in retaliation for Daniels' wife telling them earlier in the day to stay off the couple's property.
The boys have been charged with burglary and criminal mischief. Their cases are being handled in Wayne County Family Court.
Paul Bowler, the father of two of the boys, told the station that there are no excuses for his sons' actions.
"I understand they were in the wrong, but there are other ways to handle it," he said. "He (Daniels) knew who the kids were. It's not like they were strangers. And send the kids home and call the cops then. You don't sit there and torment them and tell them you're going to bash their skulls in with a hammer."
Bowler said Daniels grabbed the neck of one of his sons and left a mark. He said that his boys are traumatized and that Daniels should have faced more charges.
Daniels counters that he was just trying to protect his family.
Daniels is due back in court later this month. It wasn't immediately clear if he has a lawyer.
Wayne County District Attorney Richard Healy told the station that the incident is still under investigation.

In some places those boys might be dead...the parents should be kissing Daniels butt in my opinion. The more rough handling the boys had being scared shitless the better in my opinion. They might learn to respect other people's property.
those 'kids' are fucking arrogant little delinquents...to be told not to come on the property and then to come back and vandalize the place to the tune of about 40grand is not a childish prank...that is planned and vindictive
. the parents are aiding and abetting the little shits and raising criminals..why they could end up thieves and robbers or bankers and stock brokers...is that redundant?
In my perspective, he detained felons until the police could arrive and take them into custody. I don't see anything wrong with his behavior, and I was a prosecutor for over 20 years!
I read this earlier today. I think he did what I would've done. Maybe a good scare was good for those boys. Parents try too hard to eliminate "consequences" nowadays. Young people need to know there are always consequences to our actions. I have a close friend who has cleaned up her kids' messes over and over until....she has a 40-yr-old "Baby" still living with her (or maybe I should say living with her AGAIN) because he keeps screwing up. She keeps bailing him out.....to the extent of cashing in her IRAs to pay his legal expenses.....so now she's come out of retirement to work to pay off the taxes she was penalized for using that money. Never has he had to pick himself up and accept the consequences for any of his behavior.
Consequences......everything we do has 'em. Best they learn young.
just a great dad huh? teach that kid the lesson that, even when he harms other people, his dad will stick up for him against the very people he wrongs....what a piece of work...(oh and if the homeowner had let the boys scuttle home, how would he 'prove' it was them? "you can't prove that it was my son...it could be someone else"
i have to admit i'd be tempted to nail their feet to the floor to detain them...
My daughter teaches in a grade school in a Chicago suburb. One morning, on the playground, a boy knocked a little girl over, and then, while she was on the ground, started kicking her in the head and ribs. A playground monitor saw it, and hauled the boy into the principal's office, where his mother was called and told to come pick him up because he had been suspended for a week. She came and got the boy. When Daddy got home, and found out his little darling was suspended.....he called the principal AT HOME to threaten her life if she didn't let little Johnny back into school. They had to call the police and report him for making threats. Looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
wow,Johnnyboie was a hellraiser
Not our Johnnieboy ;-)
forgive me JB.
I never tried getting off by shooting people. Sounds kinky.
ehh i don't know about that kathy .. these were kids 8 and 10 years old .. look what happened to zimmerman .. he shot a 17 year old who was bashin his skull into the sidewalk after he broke his nose and they want to convict him for murder.. of course the media had a lot to do with that but i'm sure the media woulda piled on even worse if this guy took a few shots at these kids..of course i know you're just bein funny tho.. but the way i see this goin is the families will probably file charges against this guy and they'll prosecute him for hittin and scarin a little kid .. and they might just win .. sad ain't it ?? so they'll not only not have to pay anything for the damage they did but they'll probably profit from the whole ordeal .. and it'll probably pay for their college education.. and it won't even leave a mark on their permanent record cause they're minors ..if they pull any other shit between now and 18 their records will be sealed ..and problem is right if the guy just let the kids go it woulda been his word against theirs so then no charges woulda been filed .. what a country huh ?? i think its time we stopped sealin the records of kids who are trouble .. or at least allow them to be used for habitual offenders .. hard to say where these kids will end up but if they can do shit like this at 8 and 10 because they wanted to retaliate for bein told they couldn't play there where will they be when they're 12 and 14 ?? settin your house on fire cause you caught em stealin shit outta your garage ?? too much shit gets swept under the rug because they're minors so we can't touch em or even bring it up .. at 18 its a bit too late to say ok buddy now you're in trouble .. 8 is old enough to sit their little asses in the can for a night or two . seperated from the general population of course . but just to give em a glimpse of what it could be like in the future .. why wait till 18 to change the rules ?? get serious a lot sooner ..
