Hmmm? As for the depiction of a bad future, I think it's because Hollywood feels bad news sells more movie tickets. :-)

Unfortunately, at least some of that "bad future" is already here, for instance that giant plastic "island" floating around in the Pacific ocean. And altho I couldn't give you the authors' names, I remember reading science fiction back in the 60s that predicted some of this stuff (environmental degradation, civil liberties fading away or at least being fought over).
