Inspired by a "sign".

Share with us a random act of kindness you have witnessed or initiated yourself without forethought...just because.

Not long ago I was driving home down a side street.  Up ahead I witnessed a man on a bicycle loaded with plastic bags full of empty cans riding down the street on the opposite side.  In a slit second I saw him wipe out..bike down, him on the street...pop cans everywhere.  Just as he fell on the road and started to get up from his hands and knees, a van pulled up along side and then parked in front of him.   A young man got out and went over to help the fellow up and and then a young woman got out of the van with some empty grocery bags in her hand.

All of this happened as I was passing.

It only took seconds....I will be impressed for a lifetime.

When I was 8 or 9 my dad and uncle packed me up in the car to take me to a Yankees game. Somewhere in the Bronx the car got a flat and we pulled over to the side of the road. Dad and Uncle Italo got out to change the tire but within 3 minutes a bystander appeared with his own tools and started to remove a good tire. Apparently he thought the car was abandoned and was being stripped of parts. ( Our car was a real clunker held together with rust, used parts, and gravity.) The stranger told my dad that since he got there first he was entitled to three tires but the other one was his.

The act of kindness? My dad and uncle were tough, depression era survivors and they told the guy if he stopped and left they would not throttle the crap out of him.
