Seen Any New Film that was Great?

Has any one seen any great NEW films lately? Something destined for an Academy award? A great vehicle for your favorite star? Something we should all see?

No, unfortunately. I saw Terminator, mostly because I love Bale, and I found that to be one of the worst movies I've seen in a very long time. Now it's just my opinion, and I'm no professional movie critic, but I thought all aspects of the movie were, in a word, terrible--the direction was poor, the writing was worse, the actors were wooden characters, the story was choppy and inconsistent...even Bale was a one-trick pony, who could only scowl and look all ticked off and everything. I was highly disappointed.

However, on the opposite end of the scale, I was completely blown away by a small budget film through Lionsgate called "Right at Your Door". I got it on Netflix, and though it gets a little slow in the middle, the plot twist at the end, the direction of the shots, writing, and delivery of the lines was absolutely thrilling. Completely enthralling, and well worth the rental.

Now, I have Frost/Nixon waiting, and I'm interested to see how Ron Howard directs this. I find him slow and tedious in most of his movies, and I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised to see the tension develop.

I'm SO disappointed to hear this! The trailer made it look really good! (Bale is amazing, I agree!)

I don't know "Right at your Door" so you'll have to let us know about that one, but I've seen Frost Nixon and enjoyed it very much (and was surprised) I don't really like Opie as a director. I think he tends to be as good as the people he is working with, but doesn't take a firm hand. This means sometimes his films are great and sometimes the are really weak. (In my opinion.) I loved Frank Langella and really liked him in Starting out in the Evening - a little independent film about a Professor.

Wow! I'll keep my eye out for that one. It has such a strange name, I wasn't sure to make of it.

I saw "My Sister's Keeper" tonight and absolutely loved it. It was very well written, the acting superb, very impressed with the young actors especially. Very well written. (nothing worse than a cheesey movie) And the soundtrack is GORGEOUS. Can't wait to get it.

Hi, Steve, You might enjoy the movie "The Good Night" - it is a weird little independent film made by Jake Paltrow (Gwynnie's brother) with Penelope Cruz, Simon Pegg and Danny De Vito. It has no explosions and is a kind of mocumentary about a guy who writes music for commercials and deals with dreams.

Nothing that has come to my local Cineplex interests me. I have seen some of the current far via the internet and my fears were justified. I did go to see Quantum of Solace the first time I attended a new release in 8 years and was disappointed to say the least. Maybe if I was under thirty the violence and sophomoric humor that is Hollywoods standard might be more palatable.
