One Reader's Suggestions to Fix America

There recently was an article in the St. Petersburg Fl. Times. The Business Section asked readers for ideas on: "How Would You Fix the Economy?"

Dear Mr. President,

Please find below my suggestion for fixing America 's economy. Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan. You can call it the "Patriotic Retirement Plan":

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them $1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.

2) They MUST buy a new American CAR. Forty million cars ordered – Auto Industry fixed.

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage – Housing Crisis (largely) fixed.

It can't get any easier than that!!


P.S. If more money is needed, have all members in Congress pay their taxes.

Mr. President, while you're at it, make Congress retire on Social Security and Medicare. I'll bet both programs would be fixed pronto!

sheesh! it must be raining again up there again.
try a little sunshine, pacis --- vitamin d --- or at least some full spectrum lighting. it'll help pull you out of that funk you've been in.

retire from their corporate job. anyone is free to start their own business. no one said anything about not making money.

no one said anything about quitting work all together. the reference here was 'job openings'. the beauty of retiring at 50 would be that you'd be experienced enough to start your own business and young enough to have the strength to do it.

as for the other stuff, it looks like the government is doing their part to buy.....ooops, i mean 'bail out' the other concerns, so maybe they would do the right thing and lower the consumer's purchasing cost. freddie mac, fannie mae....the list just grows every day.

i'd love to see purchase cost and tax 'deflation' in my lifetime. but i dare to dream.

I think it is a brilllant idea. But I have to ask OC, isn't this a resdistrobution of wealth that FOX and all the righties rail against?
