It seems that every time a story is printed about the Obama's enjoying a night out on the town, it includes a lavish lobster dinner at a swanky eatery.
Tsk-tsk.
And we know Miss Michelle didn't have any trouble blowing out the candles because her husband invited the 'inner circle' to join in the festivities, like Marian Robinson, Michelle's mother, and Atty General Eric Holder and his wife Sharon Malone. Eric and Cheryl Whitaker, and Marty Nesbitt and wife Anita Blanchard flew in from Chicago. Most of the other guests come from their circle of Chicago friends, many of whom joined the Obama administration, such as Valerie Jarrett, Senior White House adviser and personal friend of the Obamas, Susan Sher, the First Lady's chief of staff, Cindy Moelis, Director of the White House Fellows program, Elizabeth Alexander, a former University of Chicago faculty member now at Yale, who delivered a poem at the Obama inauguration, and Jocelyn Frye, Mrs. Obama's Harvard Law School classmate and Director of Policy and Projects in the First Lady's office.
The president rented a private room (of course) at Restaurant Nora for four hours and had a special lobster and lamb meal prepared. The lobster dish on the regular menu is $35 --- but you know the costs were significantly higher as Chef Benjamin Lambert prepared a special off-the-menu lamb dish for the birthday girl, as well as seared Maine lobster and saffron risotto, complemented by organic wine, a 2008 Spottswoode Suauvignon Blanc. Lambert told The Washington Post that he'd been planning for the presidential meal for two weeks.
That said, it's nice to know they're enjoying organic foods. And the wine was reasonably priced at $68 a crack. I'm sure a good time was had by all.
Now, I don't begrudge anyone their birthday celebrations (I'm still in the throws of my own), but is there no end to the Obama's very public, and very extravagant spending during such rough economic times?
Imagine the good things the cost of the rented room, dinner and bar bill could have done for people in Haiti...or even right in DC...and every state in our country.
I dunno.....something isn't right when someone who promised so much to so many, and has since spent so much on himself and his family, and is preparing to sell so many of us down the river with socialized health care and the extinction of caring for our country's aging population. I would think the TBD readership would be very concerned about this, as it's our aging behinds -- and any others over the age of 40 years -- that are on the line here. And yes, the Obama's are over 40, but they will 'fiddle-dee-dee' their way down the yellow brick road on this one, because their health care, and that of their family, will be exempt from social health care....for life. A perk also enjoyed by house and senate members.
I really want to respect these people, but their sensibilities and priorities are just a little skewed for my likeing. It's as if this extravagant spending (the $20,000 vacation rental) is being flaunted in the faces of so many who have lost their businesses, their jobs, their homes, their cars, their kid's education...it keeps getting worse for the people, but large corporations continue to be bailed out...so they can be government owned. Cha-ching!
I just don't get a warm and fuzzy about things to come.
