 "[I]nsurers should be able to offer incentives for wellness care and prevention – something particularly important to me. I operated on too many people who could have avoided surgery if they’d simply made healthier choices earlier in life."

Hummm.....why do I hear the whisper of "identifying previously existing conditions" here?

I don't.

"Look, I joined a health club!" (save 5%)

"Look, I don't smoke!" (save 5%)

"Look, I have 15% body fat!" (save 5%)

The problem is, the whole point of insurance is to spread the risk out among both the healthy and the sick. Even in an equitable system, let's say that an insurance company pays out $15 Billion in a year--they need to earn 10%, so they need to charge $16.5 Billion. You've either got to divide that out completely equally among the insured, or you've got to divide it based on statistics so that you charge more from the people that can be predicted to use or need more (and even then, it's still "chance," since there are plenty of medical costs that cannot be reliably predicted).
That's really circular. Perhaps they would have made better choices if they had been able to afford coverage to go to a doctor sooner or more often. I haven't read/heard the rebuttal in its entirety yet.
This is what I heard a caller say during a NPR show about healthcare. He wanted to know why should he have to pay for someone else choices. I just sincerely feel the the republican party promotes the notion of caring for no one but you self. These people obviously believe that they will never experience hardship. They believe they are entitled to comforts but don't want to pay for them. Waging war was not problem, but seeing to the health of their fellow americans it just too costly. Whatever happened to the ProLife stance?
I guess I should not get the up coming knee replacements because I made the bad choice of teaching children by standing on concrete floors for 38 years. It is all my fault.
It's only Pro-Life when it's a new infant that they still have a chance of brain washing.

Toby, that was hysterical!!
