Since mainstream America has become more accepting of African-Americans, Limbaugh has decided to play against its new racial fears, Arabs and Muslims. Despite the fact Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law school, Limbaugh has called him an ‘affirmative action candidate.’ Limbaugh even has repeatedly played a song on his radio show ‘Barack the Magic Negro’ using an antiquated Jim Crow era term for Black a man who many Americans are supporting for president. Way to go Rush.

The Republican war on voting finally made its way to the Supreme Court, and soon we’ll know whether or not our conservative court will reverse more than 50 years of social progress on voting rights.

I would not doubt it. Hopefully he can find some moderate jurists that could squeak through. All I ask is that we get someone who is not a hard right winger or an extreme leftist.

Actually there is a lot of the Supreme's plate this term.

As to what will be decided has to wait until the decision and the basis of the decision.  

The voting rights act has the issue with enforcement, and it relates to Jim Crow laws and how they were applied in the Old South states that were particularly identified for federal oversight as to what was done and not done as required by the act.  The issue is related to time and to fairness in those states as to how long the feds have extra-jurisdiction in those states as compared to others.

The Court has already made decisions on other voter rights issues such as voter ID and will again in the future.  The issue in this case is the voter franchise as to how it is implemented and what can not be done to be compliant.  

And yes, he does, the president could be able to make appointments but whether he can get senate approval is problematical if the appointee is way out and if not a one-for-one replacement of the supposed prior justice's political values.

Breyer - will be 73 - Clinton

Alito - will be 63 - George H. Bush

Sotomayo - will be 59 - Obama

Kagan - will be 53 - Obama

So, it would most be likely Scalia or Kennedy beyond replacing Ginsberg that would shift the balance.

after the gerrymandering to negate minority voting that has occurred, does it take a special set of blinders to be unable to see that racism is still alive and well in america? and do those blinders extend to the justices upon the supreme court...

Massachusetts officials came out swinging this week after Chief Justice John Roberts argued in a hearing on the constitutionality of a part of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that Mississippi may be more sensitive to black voting rights than Massachusetts.

I'd laugh at the GOP's insistence that "racism is over", is I wasn't so sickened by how often it still rears its' head - And by how much the GOP depends on it.

Just the other day, I was reading the Washington Post online, and I did something I've never done before: I flagged a comment as "obscene". Because what it contained (And how it made it past the WaPo's automated filters is a good question) was a pinheaded teabagger racist rant that wouldn't have looked out of place on a KKK pamphlet.

Claiming that every last black American is a freeloading welfare queen who voted for "Obammy" because he was going to hand the reigns of power over to the Black Panthers was just the tip of this scumbags' rancid iceberg. It read like something a sub-literate White Supremacist would hand out at country & western bars and paramilitary gun shows - Pure fiction, brimming with loathing, paranoia and hatred, all filtered through the self-pitying "victim" pretense.

I have to wonder - How do people whose great-great-great-grandparents weren't even alive when the Civil War ended, feel that they're heroic holdouts, still fighting it - Like those stories you'd hear about Japanese soldiers hiding in caves 30 years after WW II ended ? What kind of cracked-brain believes that to be honorable ?

Voucher school textbook defines ‘hippies’ as followers of rock stars who may have worshipped Satan

A school participating in Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's controversial voucher program is apparently using a history book that teaches its eighth-grade students that "hippies" were dirty followers of Satan-worshipping rock musicians.

The textbook, “America: Land I Love," includes a section on the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

Here's a paragraph taken from that section, which was published Wednesday by AmericaBlog.com:

Many young people turned to drugs and immoral lifestyles; these youth became known as hippies. They went without bathing, wore dirty, ragged, unconventional clothing, and deliberately broke all codes of politeness or manners. Rock music played an important part in the hippie movement and had great influence over the hippies. Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults or practiced Satan worship.

It's not clear which school is using the aforementioned textbook. John Aravosis, who published the text on AmericaBlog, said the source was "a friend" who sent him a photo of the section.

 

But this isn't the first time books used in Jindal's voucher program—which allows poor and middle-class students the opportunity to attend private schools that often have religion-based curricula—have been called into question. Last fall, Mother Jones magazine published a list of "14 wacky 'facts' kids will learn in Louisiana's voucher schools."

Among them:

"A few slave holders were undeniably cruel. Examples of slaves beaten to death were not common, neither were they unknown. The majority of slave holders treated their slaves well."—United States History for Christian Schools, 2nd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 1991

And:

"[The Ku Klux] Klan in some areas of the country tried to be a means of reform, fighting the decline in morality and using the symbol of the cross. Klan targets were bootleggers, wife-beaters, and immoral movies. Last month, Jindal defended the program in Washington.

"To oppose school choice is to put the wishes of the adults who control the status quo ahead of the needs of our children," Jindal said. "To oppose school choice is to oppose equal opportunity."
