We have a Pearl Harbor vet living here:  Frances Ray Everett.  He will be 90 in Feb! He was able to save himself from his ship that was sinking, but all the bombs & loud noises affected his hearing.  Thus he had to transfer from the Navy to the Coast Guard & finished his liffetime of duty there.  He was a communications officer & he still remembers his Morse Code, even if he can't remember daily things much anymore.  He is a silly flirt & has the cutest smile!

We have a retired Marine from WW2 in our senior group.  He's married to one of the ladies.  He has Alzheimer's, and can't tell you what he had for breakfast....but he can tell you every major battle he fought in.  He was in the Pacific and fought on Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima.  He received a Silver Star.  He is so sweet....quiet and well-mannered.  I told him how much I respect him and how my son considers him a hero.  He understood when I told him...but I'm sure he doesn't remember.  He smiled and thanked me when I told him, though.

I was just at Pearl Harbor last Monday.  This is my first visit to Hawaii and as the daughter of a WWII veteran and career Navy man, I knew I had to visit.  It was an awesome experience and I would recommend it to everyone who gets the opportunity.

Haven't been to Hawaii yet but Pearl Harbor Day featured prominently in my life as a child since teachers reminded us of it regularly in school as a part of our history.
