Many, many times. I ran into a lady that I taught in a Masters class a few years ago. She told me if it were not for me she would have left the teaching profession by now. It made me feel good.

Yes!  I have received Emails and messages on Facebook from the most unlikely students telling me how I influenced them. What nice surprises each time.

Most recently I received a message on Facebook and the girl, who I don't remember very well, told me two things that made me very happy.  First and foremost, she told me that only in my class did she feel smart. That's a big goal of mine--to empower the kids and show them what they can do without my help.  Second, she told me that because of ME she became a teacher. Then she said she sits on the desk when she teaches, the way I did when I had her.  Cool!

 

Not long ago a young man I had recently graduated law school and attributed much of his success to things he learned from me.  He said he realized that because of me, he was where he is today.  Wow! He attached a paper, on which he received an A, on Kurt Vonnegut.  His Slaughter-house Five was one of my favorite books to teach because it reads like a comedy, but it is the most poignant treatise against war I have ever read.

I have written to a few important people who influenced my life in really good ways to thank them.

i have a couple of friends who have little brothers who both play the guitar and they both told me years later that if it were not for me they wouldn't .. i was their main influence as far as the guitar went .. they'd come by the house with their big brothers and see me there and go home and think thats what they wanted to do too.. and i never knew till years and years later .. if it was only one little brother that woulda been great .. but it was two .. from two different big brothers .. no relation .. it made me think .. even when you don't realize it and have no clue somehow some way you're influencein somebody .. makes me think of martin luther king .. he said its always the right time to do the right thing .. i musta did the right thing .. least i hope i did ..
