I once read Hawaii by James Michner. There was a whole section of the book that talked about the Leprer's colony on one of the Hawaiian islands. Michener generally did very extensive research for his books so I would think what he wrote was close to the truth. The infected people were dropped off there and petty well left to their own devices. Not only were some sicker than others but some were down right evil.
