I was reading an article in Mental Floss magazine that explained how the best eggnog was often aged for six months or more.  This sounds a little off to me, but the article explains that as long as it is more 'nog' than 'egg' there is little chance for spoilage.  For my Sister and my daughter, the holidays just aren't here until the cork is popped on that first carton of the creamy (expiration date being no more than two weeks from the time of purchase), tasty, once-a-year treat.  My mother mixes a 'spice tea' concoction made from Tang and a variety of spices which tells her taste buds that Santa is on his way and I remember (long ago and far away) enjoying an indulgent 'Tom and Jerry' every year when the weather got brisk.

I no longer drink alcohol, so I'm now satisfied with the free wassail that my bank hands out when the holidays arrive....or even better...one of the local coffee houses makes a pumpkin pie latte that puts the ones made by a famous chain coffee house to shame.

Which drink lets you know that Christmas (or Hanukkah...or Kwanzaa...or the winter solstice) is just around the corner?

Dang problem if i stil drank alcohal I wuold make that eggnog it suonds very tasty.

oh i gave up drinking years ago....somewhere between 15 and 20 years ago...i decided that alcohol impaired my judgement, and, even impaired, i was thinking some people were aholes...when i stopped drinking, i was convinced they were...but it sure cut down on guests and 'friends'


I desided that alcohol impiared my charactor.

especially when you start thinking that vintage wine is 'thursday'....

I gave up alcohol about 17 years ago. For the same reasons. And with the same results.

I give up drinking on Mondays and start back with beer on Saturday and wine in Church on Sunday.

I love mulled cider, sparkling grape juice, and hot cocoa spiked with a little peppermint Schnapps.

I'm also an eggnogaholic, so l try to stay away from it. I found a recipe for a lower fat eggnog I may try--I have faith it won't taste decadent enough to trigger my addiction.

Skinny Eggnog

Servings: 7 • Serving Size: 1/2 cup 
Calories: 106.7 • Fat: 2.5 g • Carb: 15.3 g • Fiber: 0.0 g • Protein: 5.3 g 
  • 3 cups 1% milk
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • freshly grated nutmeg, for garnish
  • spiced rum or bourbon (optional)

Heat 2-1/2 cups milk in a medium saucepan. Split the vanilla bean lengthwise and scrape out the seeds; add the seeds and pod to the saucepan and simmer over medium heat.

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, sugar and cornstarch until it turns light yellow.

Temper the eggs by gradually pouring the hot milk mixture, about 1 cup at a time, into the egg mixture, whisking constantly (this is important, otherwise you'll make scrambled eggs). Pour the mixture back into the pan. Place over medium heat and stir constantly with a wooden spoon until the eggnog begins to thicken, about 6-7 minutes. Remove from the heat and immediately stir in the remaining 1/2 cup milk to stop the cooking.Remove the vanilla pod, let it cool and transfer to a pitcher, chill until ready to serve.

Spike the eggnog with liquor, if desired, and garnish with nutmeg.
