The Kentucky Derby and the Classic Mint Julep -- A Marriage Made in Heaven

By Art Namendorf

April 30, 2010, 9:44AM

Mint Julep.pngSaturday, May 1, 2010, marks the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby. It also marks the copious and conspicuous downing of the Derby’s favorite cocktail, the mint julep. It was served at Churchill Downs’ opening in 1875 and is now the official drink of the run for the roses.

This libationary fusion of bourbon and mint is both full of history and shrouded in tradition. Lauded by writers, it is even jokingly claimed to be the real cause of the Civil War

I don't know, there are certain things in it that are still inscrutable for me, but I just let it wash over me.
Too much color in the center of that last hat WS, but the model's pretty.
They use women’s earrings for fishing lures.
What can we use these beautiful hats for when they get old?
The favorite
Super Saver 7-1 now

Sense no-one answered my question, I will answer it.
They can use the old warn out hats for bird’s nests.
The birds will love them.
"BIG HATTED WOMEN"!!!!

Continue to mill around. But, it's now time for the horses to start taking over the stage.

Who is going to win?

Here are my picks.

Winner, Ice Box
2nd, lookin at Lucky
3rd Line of David.

I would have picked Line of David, But the jocky riding him today is not the Jockey that rode him in his big win that put him here. His big win was The Arkansas Derby. The Jockey was John Court, who is the son of a high school classmate of mine. The jocky riding today is his regular jockey who was hurt and therefore didn't ride the horse in the Arkansas Derby.
STEP RIGHT UP! What are your picks? The race goes off a little after 6 pm EDST.
Robbie
It is so sloppy which is the reason Super saver became the favorite yesterday Though the filly Devil May Care looks kind of good, always like the fillys
From what I've read the filly probably doesn't have the stamina to run that length in the mud. But I am about as far from a horse racing expert as you can get. Sounds to me like the mud is going to be so deep that throwing darts is probably the best way to pick a winner today.
Now you tell me you're not a horse racing expert, after I put everything I have on your earlier picks.
You'll thank me later.
Today's proper derby attire
