A big pot of...

My family is gathering this weekend from all over the world. Some of us haven't seen each other in almost twenty years. We spend most of our time together in the kitchen, and I always make gumbo. None of us is from the south, yet somehow it's not a real gathering until the kitchen smells like gumbo.

 

What is your  family's specialty when you gather? What are some of the tastes and smells of your youth? Have you passed on the recipes to the next generation?

I don't do a lot of sugar, but I love sweet tea. Yum.

Oh B A F - you suddenly made me yearn for my darling late step-father's delightful Sunday dinners, Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding . Such a proper Englishman was he. Tears in my eyes, remembering his talent for getting it all perfect, his timing was impeccable. And Sunday morning breaky - a proper English breakfast . . .and my mum's fabulous meals, it may have just been we three, but the joy and laughter . . . I carry inside of me.

Oh, yes, B A F! I was very young when our special Sunday meals ended, but I do remember the smell of the roast beef, and I remember liking those meals.

I hesitate to bring this up, but my mother was a firm believer in convenience 50s. Every Christmas with the ham we had some green jello thing with...what, cottage cheese? Sour cream? I don't know. I just remember it was green. I have argued with my brother about what it might have been, and we can't reach consensus. We are secretly pleased that the recipe seems to have been lost.

My wife makes:
1 cup coolwhip
1 cup cottage cheese
1 small package jello mix (lime)
one small can pineapple chunks (drained)
dump together and stir, chill 15 minutes> serve

Maybe that's it! Did they have cool whip in the 50s?

Nope, we used real whipping cream, straight from Nils Jensen's Jersey cow. Otherwise, it's the same recipe my grandma used. Some things never change...

(And I think it is better with lemon Jell-o than with lime, as I remember from the church suppers. Heh.)

Sister and brother in law came last night, Mom was there, we had roasted chicken, broccoli,
salad and rice.
