In 1966, I was just beginning to teach myself the guitar after three years of playing drums exclusively.
That same year, I saw Eric Clapton for the first time when Cream appeared on the Ed Sullivan broadcast. I was already aware of this guitarist from Cream’s hit single on the airwaves at that time (“Sunshine of your Love”).
Ever since, I have been following this man’s exceptional career. He, more than any other electric player, has influenced my electric style, and he has brought this man so much musical joy for so long, I can hardly believe it….what a portfolio this guy has created for the music world to listen to and appreciate for generations to come.
Not surprisingly, Mr. Clapton has a heart as big as his talent for the blues….he regularly gives much money away for personal causes.
The selection I have put in this article is an example of Eric’s early work on the Strat. “Hideaway” was recorded in 1966 when Eric was a “sideman” with an established British blues band, called John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers.
Some of his finest playing ever…just check out his phrasing….just unbelievable at times….still can’t get many of his inspired licks….enjoy…….
