Many of the tbd gang do seem to march to a different drummer. I am often surprised at just how diverse our backgrounds seem to be.

 

This thread is a place to tell stories about things you have been involved with and find out if follow tbd'ers Have similar experiences.

 

I'll start off.

 

I once was a witness for the defense at a spy trial. I wasn't really defending the guy. When you are handed a summons to appear at a federal trial, you go. If the defence thinks your testimony might in any way help their client, they subpoena you, and you go.

I got to spend two weeks in KC, living in a rented house for almost two weeks with 5 other old buddies from my Previous Army days.

The procesocution started out asking for the death penalty. Later reduced it to life imprisonment. He was convicted and sentenced. His court appointed attorney appealed. The court threw out some of the evidence. the Government decided that they could not convict without the use of that evidence and he went free.  If you have any interest in this here is the story.  http://openjurist.org/354/f2d/726/gessner-v-united-states

 

If you google George Gessner it will take you to a time magizine article that is so far from the facts that I will never trust time again.

 

What unique events have you experienced?

A rather superficial one: I was the Sales Coordinator at an Atlanta Embassy Suites Hotel during the 1988 National Democratic Convention in Atlanta. Several months before the event, I booked the entire hotel w/3 groups: a chunk of ABC news, the Arkansas delegation & the Mississippi delegation. I met & worked w/then Governor Bill Clinton, and set up the logistics for a speech for then Senator from Tennessee, Al Gore. One of my ABC news contacts gave me credentials to the floor, w/the primo mealtime time slot for dining in the ABC News commissary (where I bumped into, quite literally, Ted Koppel ;-p). I saw several national political leaders & several celebrities. It was a lot of fun.

A meaningful one.... as a non-Catholic (at the time) & non-practicing anything, I met an Archbishop. He was terminally ill with cancer when we met, so his hectic schedule had slowed significantly. We crossed paths a handful of times in the last several months of his life. It was a unique experience, b/c he didn't have to be 'on' for me... I wasn't a parishioner, I had no professional affiliation w/him, and I guess b/c I wasn't Catholic at the time & had no ties or interest in organized religion, I wasn't intimated by his role, as many might be. So, I got to just be friends w/this very powerful, spiritual man, as he journeyed toward death. My presence seemed like a breath of fresh air to him when I would go to his residence & visit. It was a beautiful, humbling experience for me. It was 18 years ago, & I still soften & smile when I think of it.

It would be nice if I could friend someone like this d's girl. It's about time I start thinking about getting into heaven. I may need to friend a higher authority though.
