As some of you know, I have a good friend who is a General in the Marines. I've known Jim since middle school through our college days when he left to join the Marines. I write him a couple of times a week, just to keep his feet grounded in the NW and let him know there are people here thinking about him. A week ago, I sent this email to him:
I see that troop withdrawal from the major Iraqi cities is scheduled for Tuesday. Are they ready? Do we hold our breath?
Jim is considered one of the world's leading experts on warfare in the Middle East. I thought his response was interesting...and frankly contradicts what I hear from British journalists.
We've been out of most of the cities for a year or more and only a
couple are really problematic at this point. The media will highlight
them, and the enemy will surge some explosions, killing innocents, but
that's the unfortunate nature of the game in the Mid-east right now.
(Even Saddam had to deal with this sort of violence, admittedly he dealt
with it much more forcefully...) The Iraqi military and police are
ready enough, but the enemy will seize any chance to murder. No reason
to hold our breath, but probably a few prayers for the innocent are in
order, smile.
