I listen to NPR almost every morning and heard today about William F. Buckley, Jr's attack on the John Birch Society a generation ago. He sent copies of his attack to Barry Goldwater, to John Tower, and to Ronald Reagan...all of whom seemed willing to allow the Birchers to take control of the Conservative GOP.

Today, I see the true "leaders" of the GOOP as a dollar chasing quitter from Alaska and a radio blow hard who has never run for any public office nor served day one in the military. (Say what you will about W...and there's a lot to be said...at least he put on the uniform.) Because these idiots - and other 'conservative' morons like them pander to the lowest possible denominator of the GOOP...and flame the hate and fear...they marginalize the party terribly. When they attack a minority who has pulled herself up by her own boot straps into one of the most powerful positions in the land, they alienate themselves from any possible move towards the middle. When they deny changes in health care...they deny a great many people who 1) have issues of their own that are unresolved; 2) have immediate family members who are in deep financial trouble because of medical bills; or 3) KNOW several people who are in that boat....they will find, when the dust settles, that they have a difficult task explaining why they opposed helping these people. (It'll die a fast death...much like their attack on gay people. We ALL know someone who is gay...and are angered when people attack them 'just because'.)

I keep waiting for a real Conservative, like Buckley, to step forward and kick Sarah and oxyRust to the gutter, where they belong. I recall in the hay-day of Power for the GOOP, when they could point at anything and scream BE AFRAID!...it was actually POPULAR to be part of that movement. After all, we all entertain the idea that someday we'll be as rich as THEY are. Funny....THEY got richer and the rest of us didn't see one damned dime...unless, of course, we were preaching on TV.
