All over this Country . Food is thrown away . Places that serve food throw it in the dumpster every day . I would guess Schools do the same . Is there a law that prevents this from happening ?

Is there a reason it can't be giver to food banks , soup kitchens ?

People all across out Country are going hungry . Something needs to be done .

Any Ideas ?

I am a libertarian on some issues and this may be one of them.  There is no law that I know of to prevent this, but one would hope we do not need one. Some of this takes place but this takes a certain amount of infrastructure, organization, volunteers, someone to move the food around, store it until its end delivery point, fuel, vehicles, etc. Some might claim health issues, some producers might claim this cuts into their profits by reducing demand, etc. I used to work for a catering service at one time and we did give lots of stuff away to the salvation army or at least offer it and they sometimes would send a truck to pick the stuff up. Yes there is too much waste in America and not just food. It seems to be part of our culture (and not a good part).

I'm thinking being a libertarian might be a good choice . I commend ya for that ...

Our stores donate to the food banks.

many places that serve food have the slop hauled away by hogfarmers who cook it up and feed it to the pigs. the cooked ready to eat food sometimes is not donated because of the time limits for safe consumption and liability.

That is what they do here also ...

An old boyfriend worked for the newspaper in Chattanooga and they would have an employee party I think in the fall and there would be leftover stuff, all sorts of hamburgers, hot dogs and buns and stuff like that. And he was APPALLED that they threw it all away when about a couple blocks away, there was a soup kitchen. Their excuse was it was a liability if someone got sick. My boyfriend, after that FIRST year would ask whoever was in charge if he could take the extra stuff home and on his way home, he would drop it off for the "Community Kitchen"
