social sites and how they've changed ..

ok i don't know how long all of you have been here but i know some of you for more than a few years .. but not all .. this is just one of those musings you have .. a fleetin thought .. when the first social sites came upon the scene i think most people mistook them for datin sites and don't get me wrong i do believe that you can meet someone this way .. just ask dell .. not only did he meet the love of his life thru a social site he also wrote a book about it .. but after awhile it became clear that these were just cyber hangouts where you could exchange ideas and maybe there were a few hookups here and there .. but that wasn't the main reason that most of us were here .. but every now and then some newbie would come along and put up their first post and it would go somethin like this ..

hi i'm bob and i'm 5'9'' weigh about 210 and i like women who like car racin and good movies and maybe a beer and some good ole country music .. if i sound like someone you'd like to meet message me and we'll talk ..

and of course we'd all laugh and jump on the poor bastard right away and set em straight and he'd never come back again unless he had a thick skin and could take a good ribbin .. it was clear he was there for one thing and one thing only .. and thats the reason why i think a lot of sites start out with 500 members and only have 50 that are active .. they all come thinkin they'll hookup and find its not really about that .. don't get me wrong there are women and men to meet .. but you'll only meet them if you become part of the group usually .. i dunno just one of my late nite musings .. if dell wrote his book all over again i wonder what he'd change knowin what he knows now ..

my cousin actally moved back here to Michigan because of the band, which they're trying to get back together for a reunion show. The band was inducted in the Michigan rock & roll hall of fame this summer. Sadly, this has become all consuming to my cuz as it's pretty much all he talks about now. Evidently there was a resurgance of garage bands a few years ago and suddenly he was getting all this attention on the internet. Then this year the hall of fame thing and suddenly he was getting his bit of fame, which kind of explains all the so called 'friends' on facebook. I surely don't begrudge him his 15 minutes but I do find it all kind of sad that this is all that matters to him now.

well a.w. speakin from experience you never get over that love of music and the whole band thing .. it can be cruel and vicious too and at times you wanna kill each other but if its a good close band you fight like brothers .. or it can be like a marriage but to 3 or 4 people . and usually with no sex either .. who the hell wants to do that ?? yet you do for the music ..and its hard to get that outta your system .. and for some the fame in itself is a drug .. i think the fame part is the downside actually ..i'd hate to have people i don't even know commin up to me askin for my autograph or just buggin me in a resturant while i'm tryin to eat a meal or worse yet cornerin me in the john when i'm tryin to take a leak .. fans can be .. fanatic .. yet some still want that so bad . and once you're really famous .. its hard to be unfamous again .. look at the way elvis had to live .. and they shot john lennon . of course they were really famous but there are other horror stories about rock stars .. i hope your cousin gets just enough to see his dream but not too much to make him crazy ..

Frenchy, this is the first place I've come to where I'm feeling like I'm back with friends, like in Eons. You did great. I'm looking forward to lots of interesting conversations (and weird conversations, and funny, etc). You just never know what one topic will turn into, and they do take all kinds of twists and turns.
