Plastic surgery for dogs, cats a growing trend

Some pet owners are paying for procedures for their dog or cat to have the “right look” as they turn to plastic surgery.

Sometimes the procedures can help the pet’s health, but other times, the procedures are purely cosmetic, according to reports.

From pet braces, cosmetic eye replacements, tummy tucks and ear implant surgeries, some owners are putting their pets under the knife to get a new look. For example, ear implant surgery helps a dog’s ears stand perfectly upright.

Other pet owners are getting their dogs’ ears pierced or tattooed.

Many vets won’t perform cosmetic procedures, but for those that do find a willing vet, procedures can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The American Veterinary Medical Association and the Humane Society of the United State is also against surgery purely for cosmetic reasons.

Other procedures are for health reasons. Obie, an obese dog, was put on a strict diet and lost massive amounts of weight, but was left with excess skin dragging on the ground. Obie got a tummy tuck to remove the excess skin.

Some pet insurance plans do cover cosmetic procedures that have a health benefit for the pet or that corrects a problem, according to reports.

What a shame.  I watched and episode of Swamp People and the guy said about his very healthy dogs, "I ain't never fed my dogs.  They take care o themselves."  And here we totally mess with what a dog is.    Sad.  It's animal abuse because it goes so against the nature of the animal, and the animal has no say whatsoever.

I hate hearing about abuse of animals, it makes my stomach sink to the floor. I'm worse about animals than people, I don't understand why anyone would do surgery unless is was necessary to make the animal's life better.

I remember when I was a kid, it was pretty common to dock ears and tails on several breeds...I assume cosmetic. And take a look at the Westminister show...a bunch of gussied up dogs. Most people project their feelings on their pets its called anthropormorphism. We have domesticated our dogs and many other types of animals, but I wouldn't want to physically, purposefully hurt a pet. I think we've done a turnaround with some attitudes about animals. There are many breeds that couldn't survive without their human counterparts.
