(RNN) - Grammy Award-winning singer Joe Cocker died Monday after a battle with lung cancer, according to a representative.

He was 70 years old. ITV first reported his death, citing a member of his management team. His agent, Barrie Marshall, told the BBC that Cocker was "simply unique" and "it will be impossible to fill the space he leaves in our hearts."

"He was, without a doubt, the greatest rock/soul voice ever to come out of Britain and remained the same man throughout his life," Marshall said in a statement. "Hugely talented - a true star - but a kind and humble man who loved to perform. Anyone who saw him live will never forget him."

The singer was known for his raspy voice and jarring movements during performances. In a performance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1969, the producer hid Cocker behind a group of dancers to hide his flailing motions as he sang Feelin' Alright.

He broke through with his blues take on The Beatles' song With A Little Help From My Friends, which he performed with The Grease Band at Woodstock in 1969. The song later regained popularity as the theme for the TV show The Wonder Years.

Other hits included You Are So Beautiful and Up Where We Belong, his award-winning duet with Jennifer Warnes. He released 23 studio albums throughout his career, the most recent titled Fire It Up in 2012.

A long-time resident of Colorado, the singer raised money for education and arts programs for children in the state through his Cocker Kids Foundation.

He was born John Robert Cocker in Sheffield, England, on May 20, 1944. He met his wife, Pam Baker Cocker, in 1978, and the two were wed in 1987.
