Now This is Troubling if they can watch you through the TV
Bill would warn viewers their TV is watching them
U.S. Reps. Walter Jones of North Carolina and Michael Capuano of Massachusetts are pushing legislation that would require television watchers be given a warning before their TV sets start to watch them back.
Capuano said he’s co-sponsoring the bill in response to reports that national telecommunications companies are exploring technologies that would allow digital video recordings of the personal activities of consumers as they watch television to better target ads.
Capuano said that while the technology is in its conceptual stages, it’s important Congress establish clear boundaries before it becomes a reality.
The bill would require consumers to agree to the technology before it’s used.
The bill, which Capuano calls the “We Are Watching You Act,” would also require an on-screen warning whenever a device is recording information. — ASSOCIATED PRESS

Back when my boy was still in the Corps, I heard someplace on tv about how people can listen in on you through your cell phone.....even when It's shut off! I couldn't believe it, so I told my son about it over dinner that night, and without thinking about it, he said, "Well, duh.....what do you think I do for a living?" Then he stopped in his tracks, and looked me square in the eye, and said, "I never said that". He was only referring to tracking "bad guys" at the time, but the govt has the ability to keep a watchful eye on all of us. Hence, the NSA mess. I would like to think that they will draw the line at tvs......but it would not surprise me in the least if they didn't. And I'm sorry; just their word for it that they won't misuse it.....isn't good enough for me.
Most of these sort of things require the okay of Congress to do so congress wanting a warning screen seems like political grandstanding or maybe the legislator has watched too many X-File episodes. Although in Orwell's 1984 novel all TVs do this and it is one way that they make sure you do your government ordered calisthenics in the morning. Someday this may come to be technologically but I can think of lots better things for congress to be doing right now. I did a web search and got a lot of conspiracy sites as well as debunkings for the TV and Computer screen claims. There seems to be no evidence for existing technology to do this except with some hacking webcams can be turned on. Web sites gather cookies of all sorts and can can zero in surprisingly well if people using your server are searching for certain words, buying certain items, sending emails with certain subject lines. Sometimes this works in reverse. You may keep deleting ads or blocking ads you don't like but leave ones that don't bother you there so through a sifting process your IP number may be targeted for certain ads. However, even the most paranoid believers are in large part okay with this. If they weren't they would not be sitting in front of tv and computer screens. Cordless phones operate on a radio frequency and one could pick a conversation with the right equipment if close enough; a cell phone would have to have been tampered with to make it susceptible. GPS is another story but do not know if it works at all when the phone is off. I know drivers sometimes use it but they are done when the battery goes dead. And corporate labs usually come up with this stuff first, people always worry about the government. In our country the corporations are becoming the government and own most of the congresspeople.
My son has been an EWO (Electronics Warfare Officer) for 13 years.......and he can't and won't tell me what he does. But he does say .....without hesitation.......that reality and sci-fi are getting closer and closer.
And another thing that worries me.....is while Congress is supposed to be looking after us.....who's minding the mint? Because Congress says it has my best interests at heart......I'm supposed to trust them?
I guess I don't trust anyone that much.
I have a Radio Shack Scanner that can pick up Cell phone's . Sure are some strange conversations i have listened too . After i bought my scanner they took or said they too the chip out so people couldn't listen in . Most calls now are on higher frequencies now making mine obsolete ...
you listen to other people's conversations and you're worried about the government.....
Not in last 30 years or more .
ohhhh so you've had your scanner for thirty years and listened to cellphone conversations back in 1983...
Sure did but it got old quick . Been stuck in a closet all those years....
Cell phones weren't available till the mid 90's, we were in Switzerland and saw a man on a cell phone in 92 or 93 and I was amazed by it. I had heard they were starting to be available.
Maybe that was 1993 not 1983
what happened to holding up a glass to a closed door... I always thought that was pretty stealthy....
