One shouldn't eat two pounds at one setting without problems . It locks ya up big time . I know .....

Eat it , Just don't eat 2 pounds like i did in a day . Makes great grilled cheese sandwiches ... Blends well in soups ...

The cheese giveaway was part the commodities programs sponsored by the USDA. I remember it because I was working partime on the local Indian reservation and it was part of the food programs given to folks  who lived there...was also available to folks on other different types of government assistance.

It was purchased by the USDA to help prop up the prices of milk products from American dairy farmers.

the idea behind is was twofold

it was a price support for farmers so there would not be the peaks and troughs that led to the bankruptcies of farms during the depression and it distributed needed food to the poor so children had milk and other nutritional foods instead of going without and to seniors who might otherwise be sharing catfood with their pet

during the thirties, prices plummeted to the point that, while children in our cities were actually malnourished and in some cases starving, farmers were dumping their milk because the cost of transport was more than the milk could be sold for...farms went bankrupt and were seized by the banks who held the mortgages....so the usda instituted such programs

(it is estimated that as many as 7 million americans starved to death during the depression)

It was a subsidy from the government to the farmers cause the government paid for the cheese....and then it became a commodity from the government when it was given away free to low income folks....and all in the same Dept I think...is that one hand washing the other?
