TBD

TBD on Ning

Sunday night Downton Abbey is off, but the Oscars is on.  I usually see many of the movies either with my son for free on Tuesday night (Optonline offers free tickets to the movies in NJ on Tuesdays) or get them "somehow" so that I know what's up.

Anyone else? If so, which movies did you like?

If not, nevermind, lol.

Argo is a must see.  The government doesn't tell us one iota of what's it does. Never has, never will.  Ben Affleck has come a long long way.

I used to get together with friends and watch the Oscars but haven't done that in years. Hell, half of my friends aren't even here anymore. My husband doesn't give a hoot about the awards but we have seen a few of the movies nominated. Since tomorrow is the Daytona 500 and my daughter has a huge party for that, I don't think I'll be watching the Oscars but I might DVR it.

i very seldom go to the movies and hardly ever watch a movie on tv, i don't have the attention span for that length of time, however i will watch the oscars to see what i've missed, lol....

10 years ago we used to go to an Oscars party, it was televised on a big screen lots of tables and dinner, everyone dressed up and had pictures taken on the red carpet. I don't know if they're still doing it I haven't seen any notices this year. Santa Barbara has it's Film Festival just before the Oscars so it's all about movies for the month of Feb.

I think we out grew the awards type shows, not that interesting when you don't recognize the players.

oh you mean when you keep looking at each other and whispering "who the fuck ARE these people?"...and feeling like "I got underwear older than these people"

LOL, no joke!

There are some nice surprises among the younguns, like Affleck, Phillip Seymour Hoffman ( not for The Master, but for movies like Jack goes Boating--one of my faves).

But I will spit if Anne Hathaway wins for Les Mis. That would be such a political win.

Although I don't go to the movies very often, I do tend to watch the Oscars.  And every year I say I am going to try to see the films before hand, but then i never do.  There were quite a few this year that I wanted to see regardless of their Oscar status, Lincoln, Les Mis, Argo, Silver Linings and Zero Dark Thirty.    And I will admit, I enjoy seeing the fashion at the Oscars and other award shows.

Back in the day, I never missed the Oscars...I enjoyed all the hoopla and used to see most of the movies up for awards. Maybe the ticket prices and the advent of video,DVD, and internet along with the 24/7 celebrity gossip stuff...seems we know way to much about entertainers these days...the illusions are gone.

I usually try to see some of the Oscars...seldom get to the theater anymore...I wait and watch them at home.

I try to see movies regularly but watching a bunch of puffed up swollen heads give themselves awards never appealed to me.

i'm not the type to go to the theatre so there's not much chance i'll see any of the films before they take a vote for the oscars .. and i'll admit that in some small way i think they should give some kinda recognition to the films that stand out .. if you're a director or a screenplay writer or an actor or actress its nice to be noticed and appreciated for a job well done .. and its voted on by your peers too.. but then it makes me wonder..how much of the awards are given because of the work itself , or the popularity of the artist , or the money and power they wield ?? i know a lot of women like to watch it for the gowns and hairstyles and i suppose there's a place for that too .. but i'm not that interested in that.. but i'll probably watch anyway ..

You hit it on the head, frenchy. From what I've read, the voting is pretty much a popularity contest and many (if not most) of the people involved lobby for votes. When you consider how many great movies & actors have been ignored over the years and then some are raved about (like Lost in Translation, yeah they "lost" me alright) you have to wonder just who in the hell picks this stuff. I'm in agreement about Ann Hathaway and "Les Miserables`", they were calling her the Oscar winner about 5 minutes after the movie was released. For what, 20 minutes of work? Just because she really cut off all her hair in the movie? I will probably DVR it because I want to see Seth McFarland but I just realized I've gotten over all the hoopla surrounding this show.
