I took my trip of a lifetime last year when I took a cruise to Rome, Greece, Turkey and Egypt. I'd still like to get to Venice, Ireland, and Hawaii (so I can say I've been to all 50 states, Canada, and Mexico) but ... don't know if I'll make it -finances may not permit!
Yup. I want to see all our kids ( mine and my husbands'---and yours too, lol) happy and healthy. Either one or the other or both at times are in short supply.
Are young people ever happy? Do they know that they are allowed to be?
Chief, Read The Blue Highways by William Least-Heat Moon. He took the trip you describe. Amazing book, but it was written in the late 70s; I wonder how much America has changed since then.
Chief, Here is a good write up about the book.

There is two books i would recommend . "Walk Across America" by Peter Jenkins . It is a book you would enjoy .
Twenty-five years ago, a disillusioned young man set out on a walk across America. This is the book he wrote about that journey -- a classic account of the reawakening of his faith in himself and his country.
"I started out searching for myself and my country," Peter Jenkins writes, "and found both." In this timeless classic, Jenkins describes how disillusionment with society in the 1970s drove him out onto the road on a walk across America. His experiences remain as sharp and telling today as they were twenty-five years ago -- from the timeless secrets of life, learned from a mountain-dwelling hermit, to the stir he caused by staying with a black family in North Carolina, to his hours of intense labor in Southern mills. Many, many miles later, he learned lessons about his country and himself that resonate to this day -- and will inspire a new generation to get out, hit the road and explore.
"The Walk Westward" Beginning in New Orleans, Peter Jenkins continues his walk across America--with his bride Barbara. Lavishly illustrated with 48 pages of full-color and black-and-white photos, here is the story of the journey that captured a nation's heart .
Best two books i ever read ....
I've seen 39 states so far; I wish to have a lobster dinner on the coast of Maine. I have one of the kids I raised living up there, and he's promised me the dinner if I come up there, so that's still doable.
I want to cruise Alaska.....but it's a bit pricey for me.
I want to take a train from Chicago, to California....rent a car and drive up the coast to Seattle....and then fly home. Or.....I would settle for driving Old Route 66 to California and flying back.
I'd like to meet my long-time Eons pal in San Angelo, Tx.
I would like to go to the British Isles .....all of them.
And, of course, I would love to live to see my #4 granddaughter graduate from the Air Force Academy (which she is attempted to get into). And if I'm really lucky.....I can live to see my great grandkids graduate from high school, and maybe even make me a great great grandmother.
Naaaaah! I won't make it that long. :-)
