For a time, ROTC or the GI Bill was the way that male members of the sprawling O'Bigbelly family tree paid for college.  Eventually this also became true for the females, to a lesser extent, as the military welcomed them into their ranks.

My father did well enough for his family that this was not necessary for me.  It is just as well, since with my bad hips/knees/shins/feet (never quite right since birth), I probably would not have survived basic training.

On days such as Memorial Day, I am conscious that when it my turn to go, I may well be the first son of my family in generations who hasn't earned the right to military honors at his funeral.

I don't want those that have gone before me to think that I've forgotten that, or that I take it for granted.  I want them to know that I'm thankful--not only to those that sacrificed their lives for this country, but to those who demonstrated that they were willing to.

But since I can't say it to them, I'll say it to you.

That's very honorable, Danny, & touches my heart. I'm grateful, too, for those that have served & are serving our country.

This says it all.

My Dad was on my mind today - he was a veteran of WWII, but he passed away 18 years ago this month here in the 'Burgh.
I am very grateful to all who served, sacrificed, and put their own lives on hold for our country.
