I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

The problem with this as a truism is that we tend to treat our own experiences as more authentic, therefore more accurate, than the experiences of others. Only when we drop our own self-centered biases, and realize that our personal experiences are an island in a much larger sea of possibilities can we consider validating the experiences of others.

Well, I missed a day here. In the nearly three years that I have been commenting here,  those missing days have been rare and always due to some failure of technology. Yesterday Spectrum had an issue, probably storm related, with a fiber optical cable and we spent a full day without internet, TV and phone (landlines only). Furthermore,  heavy rain kept us indoors all day. It was like going through a time tunnel back to the 50's. I had to read a book and look through old photo albums.

"We waste time and energy waiting for a path to appear, but it never does. Because we forget that paths are made by walking, not waiting. And we forget that there's nothing about our present circumstances that prevents us from making progress again, one tiny step at a time."  ~  Marc & Angel Chernoff

"I postpone death by living, by suffering, by error, by risking, by giving, by losing." ~ Anais Nin

"Be present.
And if you've had trouble with this in the past? That's okay.
That's the nice thing about the present. It keeps showing up to give you a second chance."
~ Ryan Holiday

"How different the world would look if people spent as much time listening to their conscience as they did to chattering broadcasts? If they could respond to the calls of their convictions as quickly as we answer the dings and rings of technology in our pockets?" ~ Ryan Holiday

Today's intention: Be the person who makes somebody feel seen and heard.

"Mindfulness is not about fixing, changing or improving yourself. It is about knowing yourself more intimately and accepting what you find."  ~  Everyday Mindfulness

"One day you may catch yourself smiling at the voice in your head. This means that you no longer take the content of your mind all that seriously, as your sense of self does not depend on it."  ~  Eckhart Tolle

"To discover an awakened heart within ourselves, it is crucial not to idealize or romanticize compassion. Our compassion simply grows out of our willingness to meet pain rather than to flee from it." - Christina Feldman
