TBD on Ning

Detective Sherlock Holmes is the most brilliant investigative mind in all of England, and despite his many irritating quirks, he always has the pragmatic and faithful Watson at his back. Now, when a malicious mastermind begins to set in motion a plan that could threaten England's future, Holmes and Watson must not only show off their mental prowess, but also roll up their sleeves and throw a few punches in order to stay on top of the escalating crisis.

Robert Downey Jr. brings the legendary detective to life as he has never been portrayed before. Jude Law stars as Holmes' trusted colleague, Watson, a doctor and war veteran who is a formidable ally for Sherlock Holmes. Rachel McAdams stars as Irene Adler, the only woman ever to have bested Holmes and who has maintained a tempestuous relationship with the detective. Mark Strong stars as their mysterious new adversary, Blackwood. Kelly Reilly will play Watson's love interest, Mary.

As some Old TBDers from the movie group from last year may know, I have a love/hate/flaming desire for RDJ. I have defended this man on screen and off, been disappointed and happy. The world's worst and best rollercoaster ride EVER! LOL!!!
I am so looking forward to this movie and there will be much debate regarding the Holmes Character, but like everything else, what's old, is new again---so get with it!!!! :)
I never really got into Sherlock Holmes movies. But this one looks good. I don't mind it if this brings my sons closer to reading...thanks!
There's a lot of skepticism surrounding this movie. They say that Holmes was never like this. At least on screen. I heard that some of his prowess were mere mentions in the books, so there is dramatic license big time with this movie. But I'm not prissy about movies, as long as I'm entertained. The scenes look funny, serious, and clever. That's all I need.
I am a Holmsian. I've been to Baker Street to do the pilgrimage, feel Jeremy Brett to be the quintessential Holmes, have nevertheless seen most of the others who have played him, & have not only read Sir Arthur's works on Holmes but also several others (including Fred Saberhagen's Holmes meets Dracula - entertaining LOL) & a Lovecraftian short story by Neil Gaiman.
Robert Downey Jr portrays a sexy Holmes, but still the basic detective, with quirks, disguises, drug habits & those amazing deductions. As for Jude Law's Watson, well, all of a sudden I understand how the good doctor got all those women all the time (read the books - Mary's in them, for one).
I truly loved this movie - it's great fun, pays homage to Doyle, gives us a Victorian London that feels correct, & of course Mr. Downey who is ALWAYS worth watching in my opinion.
Hopefully more to come as Moriarty is glimpsed at, but vaguely...
I like your take on it Leo.
I had never thought of Sherlock Holmes as other than a dry intellectual. Downey's Holmes is a multifacted genius with all engines engaged, physical and mental. The characterizations were rich and interactions between the characters great fun. Purists will not be happy but it was worth the price of the ticket and I look forward to a sequel!
