Fractured Haiku/Senryu

Information

Fractured Haiku/Senryu

A place for those addicted to 5/7/5 or a more cynical, darkly funny version...Come get your fix.

Members: 76
Latest Activity: Mar 16

Format

The format is simple: three lines of verse with 5/7/5 syllables, respectively.
Haiku, traditionally, must include at least one image of nature, a seasonal reference, a "cutting word" that acts as a kind of verbal punctuation mark which signals the moment of separation of two juxaposed images, and no punctuation or similes; senryu is generally about human foibles. There are more rules to be found in the links below, if you're a purist...but WE BREAK MOST OF THE RULES HERE.

Each new discussion should act as a topic for haiku/senryu from the whole group. So, for example, the discussion "Joy" is a place to write about whatever lifts your spirits or puts a smile on your face. Sometimes, the author of a discussion may have particular criteria for what you are to write; for instance, he or she may ask that you use a specific word or words in your haiku/senryu. So be sure to read the author's instructions.

Everyone is free to post a new discussion...and please do. The more topics, the better.

Hi Lynne...Not a silly question at all! We are all just feeling our way... Your assumptions sound good to me!

Yes, discussion threads will be our topics, and the idea of posting general comments to the wall sounds good. I think the "Reply to" that appears under each comment in the thread will be good for direct rejoinders ("answering" haiku, giving "kudos," etc.).

It will all fall into place eventually, I'm hoping. Anybody with an idea of how to make this better, please chime in...there ain't no Grand Poobah of haiku here...

Hi, Quilty! So glad to see you! Here's a definition taken from wikipedia:

Senryū (川柳?, literally 'river willow') is a Japanese form of short poetry similar to haiku in construction: three lines with 17 or fewer "on" (translated in English as syllables) in total. However, senryū tend to be about human foibles while haiku tend to be about nature, and senryū are often cynical or darkly humorous while haiku are more serious. Unlike haiku, senryū do not include a kireji (cutting word), and do not generally include a kigo, or season word.

In our group on TBD, people had occasionally pointed out that what we were writing was not, strictly, haiku...and they were right. So I thought I'd open it up for the sticklers... :>)

I don't know how it's going to work here...this is set up more like a chat than a discussion, as we had on TBD....but let's give it a whirl!

Angharad, can you define Senryu for me, please?
