Yeah, I really like a meetup grp I joined recently and it's kind of a narrow interest (nothing kinky, just kinda more of an urban kinda thing), so it's almost all gals much younger than I and I really like these gals; they're a breath of fresh air compared to most of the gals in my age grp who are much more conservative/religious than I. So it's fun to be around 'em and they've all been so nice to me--haven't noticed the "token oldster" treatment (yet)--but sometimes I get depressed about…

So it's fun to be around 'em and they've all been so nice to me--haven't noticed the "token oldster" treatment (yet)--but sometimes I get depressed about how much older I am & how much less energy I have than they do. I mean, summa these gals are mountain climbers & everything else; but try as I might to get my energy level up & be more interested in outdoorsy/active stuff, I just can't. I guess these later years of taking care of elderly parents, having cancer, Hubby's heart stuff, still(!) dealing with my mom's estate, etc. took its toll on me. So I don't know if I'll be able to hang in there or not. (If I had more energy & it didn't cost so much, I'd start my own meetup group of elderly/liberal/atheist-agnostic/bookworm females. Naw, no one'd show up; I think I'm the only one in town, lol.)
Yeah, I'm the little old one…tag:teebeedee.ning.com,2015-09-22:1991841:Comment:17597242015-09-22T17:13:29.947ZLoveLife&Laughterhttps://teebeedee.ning.com/profile/FredStieg

Your "cultural" observations reminded me of some personal experiences of my own. I worked afternoon shift for years and my late evening route home took me through a more "urban" part of town. My friends thought me insane when I would sometimes stop and pick up a six pack at a local convenience store but I found that the youths hanging out there were nothing but polite, helpful and respectful to the old white man who came in his dirty old work clothes. One time a cocky, white preppy teen came in while I was there and I could instantly feel the change of tension in the room. It felt like guns would be drawn at any moment.
Thanks for the replies; glad…tag:teebeedee.ning.com,2015-03-11:1991841:Comment:17373262015-03-11T19:29:19.189Zofficerripleyhttps://teebeedee.ning.com/profile/officerripley

Thanks for the replies; glad to hear from males as well as females, I wasn't sure if it was a gender thing or not since Hubby (who's 4 yrs. older than I) says he hasn't noticed anything like this yet.

I also posted this topic on a site other than teebeedee & also gotten interesting replies; 1 gal thinks it might have something to do with the dominant culture of where you live. She says she lives in a rural area as I do but that the dominant culture of her area is Hispanic &…

I also posted this topic on a site other than teebeedee & also gotten interesting replies; 1 gal thinks it might have something to do with the dominant culture of where you live. She says she lives in a rural area as I do but that the dominant culture of her area is Hispanic & Native Nation and she notices that those kids, even if they're swaggering around as espec. teenage males are prone to do, the minute somebody middle-aged or older, even an old gringa like her, shows up, they become polite & respectful. Which was interesting & I suppose there could be something to it; I'm an old gringa too but this area is mostly anglo/caucasian & with kind of a "wild west" mentality ("Hey old man/lady, you need to be put out to pasture") to tell ya the truth.
You've given me another reaso…tag:teebeedee.ning.com,2015-03-11:1991841:Comment:17371102015-03-11T08:46:30.817ZPartTimeBrewerhttps://teebeedee.ning.com/profile/PartTimeBrewer

You've given me another reason to be conservative in my dealings with others. I have not really noticed this yet, but I have never actively participated in many groups or activities. Outside of work and family, I never had the time before. Since I retired several months ago, most of my participation has been with various Silver Sneaker exercise groups where I have sometimes been the token "youngster." As I expand my activities, I will be on guard for this effect.
