Of the yarns available around rural Milwaukee (JoAnn's, Michaels, and a few small yarn stores) I like the chunky Deborah Norville, Lion Brand Wool Ease, and got into a scarve crocheting kick over Christmas using everything from Ruffle yarns to Jiffy.
What a great question, Trish! My favorite yarn might not be the most inexpensive, so I guess I'll give a couple of answers. I love the yarns from Fiesta (Gracie and Ballet http://fiestayarns.com/store/items/view/1604/gracies_lace/) , but they are very expensive.

For budget yarns I have two old standards. I adore Knit Picks "Gloss" link (http://www.knitpicks.com/yarn--fiber-en/view-all-yarn-en/gloss-fingering-yarn.html) (Since I knit almost exclusively lace I go for the finest weight I can find, but I think it can also be gotten in heavier weight and it is a terrific price! It is a merino silk blend with just the right amount of elasticity and a really nice hand. Also Webs has a really nice lace merino/tencel (on sale right now) that is a terrific yarn.

What about others?
