The LIE between friends...!!! ... stay with me dear members, I have 2 questions in one..

I knew since I was a kid that it’s wrong to lie… Then I started to know this world, and found out that:.. “Some truth could lead us to hell coz people – in general – cannot afford to hear the truth…”

Then I was at the age and state of mind to tell the truth and be responsible for any outcome coz this is one big indicator that we are mature to handle the consequences of what we say or act…
My question here:…. We are all mature here… So, why do people lie? Why people promise you to be your friends, when they don’t really mean it? And why they don’t face you to tell you how they feel for you if they have anything they need to say about this friendship?..... why your friends lie to you?

Thanks to all answers - even the white lie....!!!.... its still a lie, and I don't like to lie, and I don't have to lie. My question too is about the Lie.. do we lie coz we are not brave to say the truth?
do we lie to protect others? but it's a lie !! and lie doesn't last too long...
An important part of my question is not answered yet…So, let me put it this way:
Let me give you an example that I faced once..
I was invited to a dinner in a nice French restaurant with couple of friends..
Attached to this restaurant is a nice bar/lounge..
… in the middle of a chat with my friends…… I saw the wife of my dear friend having a drink with a guy. Fine, could be anyone and at that minute I didn’t care to think otherwise. An hour after, she passed next to our table on her way to the ladies room, I waved to her with a smile, but she ignored me…
Lol… again I thought maybe she didn’t know me or saw me. We finished our dinner and left the place.
The next day the same lady called me and she was crying. She said that she doesn’t want me to tell her husband that I saw her with another man.
I said to her nicely: I wasn’t going to call your husband anyway coz what you do in your private life is not my business.
Then I felt she was relieved when she said:
“…. If he asked me where I was, I will tell him that I was with you… can you do that for me, please?
Listen to me please…... I love my husband but this is my ex boy friend and I need some change in my life…He makes me feel good and… its complicated really…so, would you help me…!!!
am going to stop now... leave the answer to you...

......let me hear from you what would you do if you were in my place !! its not about few extran pounds to lie about... and its not a small lie...
Would you lie to your friend – the husband is your friend, not her-…!!
whats next? The husband is a very close friend? he is happy with his wife and the wife wants more than social image and money?

Most of the time people lie for they they dont want to hurt others momentarily not realising that ultimately it will be caught and will be hurting more than he or she expected to hurt them
