TBD on Ning

I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

“We have a constant stream of thoughts meandering through our minds. That’s part of being human. However, we get to choose which of those to engage with." ~Jacky Exton

And yet, how often I abdicate my right to choose and allow myself to be bullied  by unproductive ruminations! Mindfullnes means constant vigilance.

"There is nowhere we can go to hide from our mind." ~ Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche

"It’s very easy to villainize thought as some kind of enemy of practice. We get in our heads that if there were no thoughts we would be at peace, but even that’s just another thought." ~ Unknown

"Language can become a screen which stands between the thinker and reality. This is the reason why true creativity often starts where language ends." Arthur Koestler.

"Fundamentally, empathy is a skill, like any other, and you can get better at it."  ~  Rick Hanson

'"Life is heavy at times, and that’s okay. Not okay like we want it to be this way, but like here we are. There’s something kind in just acknowledging that; in forgoing the violent pushing away we do. We can just be here together today as it is and allow that to be okay for now."  ~  Jason Garner

"Your mind tells stories. All the time. Many of these stories are untrue. Many of these stories are unhelpful. Some of these stories are are really not good for your wellbeing."  ~  Everyday Mindfulness

"Soul never sits well with dogma."
~ Lesley Hazleton

"Everyone has an invisible sign on their neck saying, 'Make me feel important.' Never forget this when working with people." ~ Mary Kay

While this sounds like a dictum of compassion, I suspect Mary Kay was using it to exploit clients in order to advance her sales agenda. This serves as a reminder that mindfulness means being perpetually aware of our own intentions. Is it noble to act noble for the sake of self-advancement? Or is it a win/win situation?
