TBD on Ning

I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

"Don't judge people for the choices they make when you don't know the options they had to choose from."  ~  Tiny Buddha

This one is very very good.

"Maybe the only question to ask today is not “What do I need to do to change?” but 'How can I love myself, just as I am?'" ~Madeleine Eames

"The therapeutic power of mindfulness lies, at its very heart, with the paradox of letting go of the need to fix in order to heal."

I am not a problem to be solved.

Another good one.

"Opinion is really the lowest form of human knowledge. It requires no accountability, no understanding. The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another’s world." ~Bill Bullard

“Amidst all that’s out of my control, I can breathe. I can love. I can show up and do my best. I can be gentle with myself, my family, and my friends. And when I feel I have misstepped, I can always breathe and begin again. This is my practice.” ~ Jason Garner

True.

"Lose the idea that reality “should” be this way or the other. Reality is as it is."  ~  Everyday Mindfulness

This isn’t bleak nihilism! This is a highly useful assessment of where we are right now, not  encouragement to throw in the towel. This is about our starting point moving to the future and we need honest, not wishful, data to know what needs to be done next.

Sorry for the "soapbox" propaganda. I just weary of people who confuse existentialism with useless negativity.
