TBD on Ning

I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

I have encountered, and been encouraged by this quotation on a number of occasions in the past, but this time it came to me with a new realization. I had always taken it to be an inspiration to keep trying, even after a day of falling short of my self-imposed goals. But today I recognized it as a reminder that each day is still a reset to zero, a new day, even if I do feel accomplished with what I have done. I can't just say "Job well done" and rest on that.

"I am not who I was a year ago, and that brings me so much peace."  ~  Tiny Buddha

Trying a different approach, in contrast to New Year's pledges that function primarily as additional sources of self-imposed stress.

Very true

"Suffering is our call to attention, our call to investigate the truth of our beliefs...Wherever we feel most endangered, most separate, most deficient - that is where we need to shine the light of investigation." ~ Tara Brach

“Ultimately, happiness comes down to choosing between the discomfort of becoming aware of your mental afflictions and the discomfort of being ruled by them.”
- Mingyur Rinpoche

"Fear-based beliefs are creatures of the dark. They are sustained outside the light of awareness and they dissipate upon mindful inspection." ~ Tara Brach

"Eighty percent of life is just showing up"  ~  attributed to Woody Allen

I know I have posted this one before, but I come back to it now because it is such a good summery of my day yesterday. Actually, this is a misquote of Allen made by one of his colleagues. The original quote used the word "success" instead of "life". I use the misquote here because yesterday was more of a stalemate than a success. But the important thing here is that even this was only made possible by just showing up when I wanted things to be otherwise.

"If we pay close attention, we can see how our beliefs about ourselves and the world give rise to the very behaviors and events that confirm them. If you believe that nobody will like you, you'll behave in ways that broadcast your insecurities." ~ Tara Brach
