I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

"Becoming familiar with the mind gradually shows us that thoughts aren’t real and that we can choose those we want to follow."  ~  Everyday Mindfulness

“The greater part of human activity is designed to make permanent those experiences and joys which are only lovable because they are changing.” – Alan Watts

"Try not to see your feelings as something that are someone else’s fault. They are yours; they belong to you."  ~  Everyday Mindfulness

While it may be true that someone else's words or actions are instrumental at triggering my feelings, I am ultimately responsible for their creation and acceptance. I alone chose whether to honor them or put them aside. But if I react instinctively, out of habit, without even noticing that I have this option, i effectively abrogate my right of choice.

"Awareness is light. It shows you things that you couldn’t see before.  ~  Everyday Mindfulness

Cute!

“Meditation is neither shutting things out nor off. It is seeing things clearly and deliberately placing yourself differently in relationship to them.” ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn

NOTE TO SELF:
Positivity does not mean ignoring the negativity around you;
it means overcoming the negativity within you.
There is a big difference between the two.

"The warrior in your heart says stand your ground. Feel the survival of a thousand years of ancestors in your muscles and your blood. You have all the support you need in your bones.”
― Jack Kornfield, A Lamp in the Darkness

"If you can sit quietly after difficult news; if in financial downturns you remain perfectly calm; if you can see your neighbors travel to fantastic places without a twinge of jealousy; if you can happily eat whatever is put on your plate; you can fall asleep after a day of running around without a drink or a pill; if you can always find contentment just where you are: you are probably a dog."

Jack Kornfield

And yet these are the reported attributes of someone with a successful mindfulness practice. Maybe I'll just go howl at the moon.
