TBD on Ning

I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

Not wanting to quibble with a revered Buddhist leader but it is the clinging that is suffering, not the happiness per se. But while in the non-clinging mode, all emotions are equal gifts.

Well, I'm back again. Thank goodness that's over. After a long flight to Calif. to see grandkids, I had an encounter with a norovirus. Will be back on track by tomorrow.

"Real wisdom is the ability to understand the incredible extent to which you bullshit yourself every single moment of everyday."  ~  Brad Warner

Very young children may have a short attention span, but given the freedom to move on to the next experience, they are rarely bored. They don't sit and ponder deeply, they just absorb and accept their perceptions. This is "Beginner's Mind", and being with my youngest grandchildren this past week has helped me remember how it is that everything is a "Miracle" when viewed with Beginner's Mind.

"Discomfort is an inevitable part of living a fulfilling life. The ability to tolerate discomfort will make living it so much easier."  ~  Everyday Mindfullness.

This is, of course, the heart of the Buddah's message. The trick is to learn how to tolerate discomfort. What's important here is to recognize that this is the norm. Permanent absence of discomfort 'ain't happening.'

As I travel in this limitless world.

Where every step is home."
