TBD on Ning

I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

"When we protect ourselves so we won't feel the pain, that protection becomes like armor, like armor that imprisons the softness of the heart."  ~  Pema Chodron

Easier said than done, but it seems that the quickest way to get past a painful situation is to become vulnerable to it and learn the lesson it affords. I'll work on that and let you know how it turns out.

"Change up your routines. Sometimes we go on autopilot and fail to notice the power of little moments."  ~  Daily Zen

"Holding on to anything is like holding on to your breath. You will suffocate."  ~  Deepak Chopra

"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us."  ~  Albert Schweitzer

You have the spark, share it.

"I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value."  ~  Hermann Hesse

"If you want a certain thing, first be a certain person.

Then obtaining that certain thing will no longer be a problem."

  ~  Zen proverb

I think this is one of those Zen thoughts that points to something without telling you what it's pointing at. Have to think on it.

"Vulnerability in the face of constant change is what we share, whatever our present condition."  ~  Sharon Salzberg

"Its not about feeling good. It's about feeling what you feel, and not running from it."  ~  Dan Harris

"A loving person lives in a loving world. A hostile person lives in a hostile world. Everyone is your mirror."  ~  Ken Keyes Jr.
